Coastal Sunbelt Produce - Laurel, MD

The multi temperature & humidity facilities project adheres to the highest standards including FSMA and HACCP compliant design engineering as well as USDA process plant design engineering.

After outgrowing an existing facility, Coastal Sunbelt Produce needed to design and build a new state-of-the-art fresh cut produce processing center and wholesale facility.

Food Tech was contacted for the project because of their expertise in facility planning and process programming services. Food Tech began the project with a complete review of items, inventory, case movement, and process programming. The review allowed Food Tech to ergonomically design the ready to eat (RTE) food process plant to retain maximum product freshness.

The completed 240,000-square-foot facility includes a central ammonia refrigeration system as well as hi-care and low-care processing areas. Food Tech provided the required “pick and reserve” slots by temperature and humidity zones and process line layouts. The project adheres to the highest standards, including those set forth in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), Safe Quality Food (FSQ), and Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).

During the project, Food Tech delivered the following:

  • Multiple temperature and humidity zones from -10∞F to 55∞F
  • Pressurized banana rooms
  • Double sided refrigerated docks with over 70 doors
  • Hi-care and low-care processing areas
  • HACCP, FSMA, USDA compliance
  • Central ammonia refrigeration system
  • Corporate office and employee amenity area
  • Test kitchen
